MEXICAN KILLED BY BLACKFOOT CHIEF
BLACKFOOT, Idaho, April 10.--In a running rifle battle between Max Smith, chief of police and a Mexican, the latter was killed near here yesterday.
For several days Mexicans had been in town, drinking heavily. late yesterday Chief Smith attempted to arrest one of their number, Pedro Paxioda, who was intoxicated and disorderly. The others interfered, but the chief succeeded in taking his prisoner to the jail.
Returning to the spot where he had made the arrest, and where he had left his bicycle, he found one of the Mexicans smashing the wheel with an ax. When called upon to desist and submit to arrest, the Mexican ran north along {line missing}, sued and a few minutes later was joined in the chase by Sheriff De Kay, who was returning from Idaho Falls by automobile.
While the chief kept up the pursuit De Kay attempted to intercept the fugitive, who then took to the fields. The chief followed, exchanging shots with the Mexican at a range of 100 yards. In a few minutes the Mexican fell. When the chief and Sheriff De Kay reached the man he was dead.
The inquest will be held tomorrow morning.
