Brady Death Not Mourned At Goodland
Citizens Recall How Community Was Generous to Family When Bandit Was A Boy.
GOODLAND, Ind., Oct. 18--Goodland, often referred to as the home of Al Brady, the notorious killer-bandit, who was exterminated last week by bullets from G-men's guns, has little reason to feel sorry for the criminal who finally brought on his own doom.
Citizens of the county recall him as a boy, only to have reference made to his connections here after he entered into his life of crime.
Brady was born on a farm near Brook and on August 16, 1913, Roy Brady, father of Al, was killed in a threshing machine explosion after which the family moved to Brook to reside with the grandparents of the youth.
The family was in destitute circumstances at the time the father met his tragic death.
Local citizens joined those of the Brook community in raising funds with which to bury his father. After expenses of the funeral were paid it was found that there was a surplus. By order of the judge of the Newton circuit court the money was placed in the Goodland bank to be kept until young Brady became of age.
It was not until August 8, 1931, that Al Brady returned to Goodland and claimed the fund and accrued interest.
His next visit back to the bank was when he and his pals raided the institution May 25, 1937, threatening Mrs. Leona Hamilton, assistant cashier, and patrons of the bank with guns, and escaping with $2,500 loot.
