Hendrie, Charles d. 1910
CHAS. HENDRIE DIED FROM HEAT IN PITTSBURG
HE WAS A MEMBER OF LEXINGTON LODGE OF ELKS--BURIAL HERE--PROMINENT IN LOCAL AFFAIRS.
PITTSBURG, Pa., July 2--(Special.)--Charles Hendrie, a traveling man and a former resident of Lexington, Ky., succumbed to the heat here today and died at the Homeopathic Hospital. There was a report that he had suicided[sic], but the police say this is not true.
Hendrie went into the Pittsburg Bank for Savings at Smithfield street and Fourth avenue about 2 o'clock to transact some business and while standing at the counter complained of the heat. He went inside and sat down. One of the employes[sic] of the bank seeing that the man was seriously ill, telephoned for the Homeopathic Hospital ambulance and sent him to that institution, where he died in less than an hour. His temperature was 108 when admitted and the physicians said he would not recover.
Many letters were found on the body addressed to Chas Hendrie, care of the City Delivery in various cities. These indicated that Hendrie had no settled home since he left Lexington. There is also a card of membership of B.P.O. Elks, of Lexington. Officers of Pittsburg Lodge of Elks took charge of the body, had it embalmed and wired to Lexington. The body was shipped to that city tonight.
Charles Hendrie was prominent and popular here. He was general manager of the Kentucky Union Land Company and January 15, 1898, resigned, to accept a position with the Great Southern Oil and Gas Company at Zanesville, O. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was 37 years of age. He has an uncle in Central City, Ky. The local lodge of Elks, of which he was a member, ordered the body shipped here and the funeral will probably take place Thursday. He is the second member of the lodge to die of heat prostration within the last fortnight. Thomas Brennan being buried last Thursday.
