William D. Andrews.
William D. Andrews, one of the oldest manufacturers and inventors of this city, died on Monday at his residence, 119 West One Hundred and Fifteenth Street. Mr. Andrews was born in Grafton, May 23, 1818, and in 1833 the family come to New York, and here his father opened an iron yard in 1836. The young man was associated with his father, and in 1840 he became interested in a wrecking company. He remained with the wrecking company until 1847. His first invention was the contrifugal pump for removing sand from wrecked ships. He was the first to raise a sunken ship by pumping it out. He also held some thirty-seven patents for hoisting machines, and received medals from nearly twenty different companies. His brother, with whom he was associated at 233 Broadway, died a few months ago, and with him the firm goes out of existence. The funeral will take place at the house, at 11 A. M. to-day, and the burial will be in Evergreens Cemetery.
