Veteran Jurist of Texas, Leader in Councils of Democratic Party, Dies

WACO, Texas, Aug. 20.---Sam R. Scott, 73, Judge of the Nineteenth Judicial District for the last twelve years, died suddenly early Thursday at a local hospital, to which he was removed from his home Wednesday night.
One of the best known of Texas' veteran jurists, Judge Scott, was born in Georgia. He came to Texas at the age of 7 with his parents, who located at Travis, Falls County, in 1869.
In 1893 Judge Scott, who had served at Falls County Judge, was appointed by Gov. James Stephen Hogg as first Judge of the Fifty-Fourth Judicial District, which, at the time of its creation, included Falls and McLennan Counties. He served as Judge of that District until 1908, when he resigned to resume the private practice of law.

In 1924 he was elected Judge of the Nineteenth District Court, and was renominated without opposition in the July 25 primary.
Many honors had come to Judge Scott. He was appointed by President William Howard Taft as a member of the commission of three to settle the Texas-New Mexico boundary dispute, as a result of which Texas recovered a large body of land.
Judge Scott ranked high in the councils of the Democratic party. He was a Democrat party. He was a Democrat of the old school, and he was a pronounced partisan of the late Senator Joseph W. Bailey, whose cause he always espoused.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, the Rev. W. W. Melton officiating.
Surviving Judge Scott, besides his wife and one son, are his mother, Mrs. Isabella J. Scott of Travis, in her ninety-eighth year; four brothers, John H. Scott and G. A. Scott of Travis, William B. Scott of Port Arthur and S. E. Scott of Rockdale and one sister, Miss Mittie Scott of Travis.
An appointment to fill Judge Scott's present unexpired term, which ends Jan. 1, 1937, will be made by Gov. James V. Allred. A nomination for the full term of four years, beginning Jan. 1, will be made by the County Democratic executive committee.
