Norcross, Alvin C. - Capt d. 1912
AUTO PIONEER DEAD.
Capt. Alvin C. Norcross Built a Steam Carriage in 1865.
Special to The New York Times.
BOSTON, Mass., June 8.--Capt. Alvin C. Norcross, builder of one of the first automobile carriages and the wealthiest property owner at Revere Beach, died suddenly this morning of neuralgia of the heart at his residence, 164 Shirley Avenue.
Capt. Norcross was born in Bradford, Vt., and was 69 years old. He came to Boston while a young man and became Captain of a towboat in Boston Harbor. Later he was in the jewelry business, having a store near the Quincy House, in Brattle Street.
He was of a mechanical turn, and in the Winter of 1865 he built a steam carriage, which was an entire success mechanically. Capt. Norcross navigated it about Boston streets until the annoyance of crowds of youngsters and the belief that there would be no commercial value in the machine caused him to sell it and it was taken West.
